Overview
One of my first initiatives after joining Cater2.me was to create a design system based on the atomic design methodology. At the time, the only design guideline available was a dated branding style guide with only a few UI element specs. This resulted in a lot of inconsistencies across our site that negatively impacted user experience, as well as created inefficiency and confusion for the engineers.
I created a design system from the ground up to solve these issues. Working with stakeholders across different departments, I codified our existing design assets while making modifications/creating new assets when necessary. The final system consisted of a comprehensive design pattern guide and a Sketch library, linked to an engineer maintained code repository, to enable modular, reusable UI elements. The system is continually maintained by me and synced across teams using Github to ensure uniformity.
Since the launch of the system, we have received many positive feedback on the ease of use and seen an improvement in engineering production velocity as well as a reduction in UI-related coding errors.
